Differences EDT, EDP
The difference between EDT and EDP is in the concentration of scent. An Eau de Parfum (EDP) has a very high share of scent concentrate (between 10–14%). The scent thus appears more intense, does not disappear as quickly and is used rather sparingly.
An Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a slightly lower scent concentration than an EDP (between 6-9%). The scent is a bit more volatile than in an Eau de Parfum and thus can be used less sparingly as well. Low scent concentrations – and thus the creation of an EDT – are more suitable for masculine scents since the masculine woody-aromatic notes are very intense and characteristic in nature.
The frequent myth that an EDT is of lower quality than an EDP is thus incorrect. The quality of the scent is the same in both.
A perfume contains approx. 150-250 different components. Usually not all of them are indicated, but only the most important notes of a scent are named.
The scent structure of all of these different notes contains 3 scent phases (top, heart and base notes) and is visualised as a scent pyramid. A scent is first perceived in the head note, then the heart note and last the base note. The transfer between the phases is slow and fluent.
The head note of a perfume is perceived most strongly right after it is sprayed on. It will fade after a few minutes. It usually contains intense, fresh, citric, green or watery scent notes.
The heart note is the second scent phase and will unfold a few minutes after it is sprayed on. The notes in the heart are usually warm scent nuances. They can be made up of flowery or aromatic notes, sweet spices or aldehydes and remain at the fore of the composition for a few hours.
The base note will keep the longest (several hours to days) and forms the final scent phase. The base note usually consists of powerful, lush scent nuances with great intensity. They are characteristic scents, animal, mossy or woody essences.
